Lawrence Bass

Years of community pollution: 1894-1902, 1907-1920

Agency: Boulder Police Dept.

Disposed of: March 18, 1920

Bass was Boulder’s first police chief, who was known “as a punisher of lawbreakers.” He died in a car crash with Boulder’s first fire truck while driving BPD’s first police car at the intersection of 19th and Pearl streets.

William Stretcher

Years of community pollution: Unknown-1920

Agency: Boulder County Sheriff’s Office

Disposed of: March 22, 1920

Undersheriff Stretcher was riding inside the car with Bass when the car crash happened. He was not initially killed in the crash, suffering for four days until succumbing to the injuries he sustained.

Elmer Cobb

Year of community pollution: 1923

Agency: Boulder Police Dept.

Disposed of: Nov. 19, 1923

Cobb was killed in an act of pig-on-pig violence after investigating police chief Claude Head for Prohibition bribery. He was shot while walking to work and left behind a billboard at 1006 Pearl St.

Raymond McMaster

Years of community pollution: 1954-1958

Agency: Boulder Police Dept.

Disposed of: Nov. 9, 1958

McMaster was shot and killed while conducting a traffic stop of a taxi cab on Route 36. The gunmen had just robbed a cafe in Lyons and were escaping to Boulder.

Fun Fact: McMaster’s daughter Monica grew up to be a pig in Florida and died as a result of injuries suffered while enforcing the law.

Gary Mills

Years of community pollution: 1972-1973

Agency: Boulder Police Dept.

Disposed of: Aug. 25, 1973

Mills, a veteran of the imperialist war in Viet Nam, was killed after responding to a domestic violence call at 30th street and Valmont road. A man, unrelated to the call, came out of his trailer and shot Mills with a 12-gauge shotgun.

Janet Hinkle

Years of community pollution: 1975-1977

Agency: Boulder Police Dept.

Disposed of: Sept. 21, 1977

Hinkle was leaving her home to go to BPD’s shooting range when she was hit by a small truck and killed. Hinkle, who belonged to a law enforcement family, had a funeral attended by over 200 pigs.

Beth Haynes

Years of community pollution: 1990-1994

Agency: Boulder Police Dept.

Disposed of: April 16, 1994

Haynes, the first Japanese pig to work at BPD, was killed in a shootout at 1590 Eisenhower Dr. A man was threatening to kill his ex-fiancée, her kids and himself when Haynes arrived. Haynes’ gun jammed during the shootout, and the man executed her while she was trying to crawl under a car for cover. The ex-fiancée and kids survived the encounter.

Stuart Holt

Years of community pollution: 1998-2014

Agency: Boulder County Sheriff’s Office

Disposed of: June 2, 2014

Deputy Holt, a retired U.S. Army Major, died of a heart attack after working overtime throughout the week prior.

Eric Talley

Years of community pollution: 2010-2021

Agency: Boulder Police Dept.

Disposed of: March 22, 2021

Talley was killed by an active shooter inside the King Soopers at 3600 Table Mesa Dr. Within 20 seconds of running into the store, Talley was killed. Nine innocent victims were also killed in the shooting, with Talley being the 10th “person” to be killed.
